Project Scope

At VFT Engineering Surveyors, we are proud to be a part of the Snowy 2.0 project, which marks the next significant chapter in the illustrious history of the Snowy Scheme. Snowy 2.0 stands as a monumental, nation-building endeavor in the realm of renewable energy, promising enduring benefits for generations to come.

This project represents the largest committed renewable energy initiative in Australia, and its significance is paramount. Snowy 2.0 will play a pivotal role in ensuring our nation’s secure and seamless transition toward a low-carbon emissions future, all the while keeping costs minimal for consumers.

The undertaking involves the intricate task of connecting two existing dams, Tantangara and Talbingo, through an extensive network of 27 kilometers of tunnels, alongside the construction of an innovative underground power station.

A key aspect of Snowy 2.0 is its ability to adapt to energy supply and demand dynamics. When renewable energy production surpasses immediate requirements and energy demand is low, water will be efficiently pumped to the upper dam. Conversely, during times of peak electricity demand, the stored water will be released back into the lower dam, effectively generating energy.

This project’s unique design allows it to offer flexible, on-demand power solutions while adhering to a closed-loop water system that embraces the principles of recycling. The surplus solar and wind energy will be harnessed to pump water to the higher dam, where it will be stored for future use, thus maximizing the efficiency of renewable resources.

How did VFT Help?

From the project’s outset, VFT established and expanded the primary survey control networks at Talbingo and Lobs Hole, extending them across the wider project. Our team has delivered critical volume, drill and blast, and structural surveys, and now supports navigation of the TBMs to create the vast underground networks of Snowy 2.0. VFT has been proud to provide survey expertise and support throughout this landmark project.
